| In October 2000, our daughter was diagnosed
with autism at the age of 18 months. While we were fortunate to
receive an early diagnosis, we struggled with determining an appropriate
intervention program for her . Her language development was delayed
so communication was a daily struggle.
We tried various picture card systems on the market with little success.
Our daughter, being so young was not able to grasp the concept
of abstract images. We needed a solution to communicate with her.
Necessity is the mother of invention, especially for parents
of children with special needs. We began putting together our
own communication system. After months of trial and error, we
developed a system that works for our daughter using real photo
images. It was as if a light was turned on inside of her as she
understood and was able to communicate with us by exchanging images
of food and toys she wanted or needed.
We have since shared this product with many parents, therapists
and specialists throughout the autism community who all agree
that elliecards have been an invaluable tool for them and their
clients.
Our hope is that other children will benefit from our experience.
